Frequently asked questions
The most common questions we get from our clients
Sunless spray tanning is a spray application of sunless tanning solution. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden brown color. Your skin will begin darken two to three hours after application and reaches its peak color within 24 hours. The color will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun.
The tan typically lasts 5 to 7 days (or up to 10 days with proper after care). The faster your skin cells turn over and shed from your body, the faster the sunless tan fades. To get the longest life from a spray tan, it is crucial to exfoliate prior to the spray tan application and to moisturize daily after the application.
The active ingredient most often used in all sunless tanners including tinted moisturizers, self-tanners, and spray tan solution is called DHA or dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. DHA is currently the most popular way of gaining a tan-like appearance without sun exposure as it carries less health risks than any of the other available methods. To date, it is the only active ingredient approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for sunless tanning. The FDA has tested and approved DHA for use on the skin.
Spray tanning has not been tested on pregnant woman. Because of this, I recommend you consult with and receive permission from your physician before receiving a DHA spray tan. I require all of my pregnant clients use nose filters that are provided.
Yes. Please be advised there is not SPF in any solution that we use. Solution does not contain sunscreen protection, so you should apply a lotion based sunscreen accordingly. My recommendation is SunBum and can be found at any retailer.
Based on your level of darkness desired and skin tone, I will give you a recommended rinse time to rinse off the cosmetic bronzer. It is encouraged to wait 24 hours after your spray tan to take a full soap shower.
The bronzer that is used will wash off your skin after your first post-tan shower (you will most likely see a puddle of colored water in the shower). The cosmetic bronzer is water soluble and should not stain most fabrics. Most fabrics and materials are completely safe (excluding leather, silk, lace, nylon and spandex). In relation to the cosmetic bronzer topic, be sure to never judge your spray tan or final results until AFTER your first shower. Bronzers can smudge sometimes and it does not necessarily mean your spray tan results were affected.
This is a common misconception in the sunless industry. There is no such thing as organic DHA. Nash Tans uses products that are EcoCert dha which is the purest form but not organic.
Whatever you are comfortable in. Many people do not wear anything. The room is completely private and if you would like to tan in the nude it is perfectly acceptable. However, if you do wear a bathing suit, underwear, or anything else, please be aware that whatever you wear may be stained. The bronzer we use for your initial color is water-soluble and should wash out of anything you wear, but the DHA applied may cause permanent stains on any clothing you may wear. Men MUST be covered.
All of the components of the spray tan solution have been used in cosmetics and food products for decades and have proven to be safe for use on the skin. If you have had previous allergic reactions to self-tanning lotions or cosmetics you may want to do a “patch test” by putting a small amount of the spray tan solution on a small area of the skin to test for possible reactions. Please let me know if you have any Peanut allergies.
While your spray tan is new, you'll want to avoid chlorinated water, as this can make the color fade faster. In addition, cut the amount of shaving you do down to a minimum, as this works as an exfoliant and will also make your tan fade. Once your tan has started fading naturally, you can resume most of your normal skincare regimen. Use a tan extender.
Your appointment will last no more than 30 if you are a new client including consultation, spraying and dry time. After you are familiar, your appointment will take approximately 10-15 minutes based on the service you choose.
If you must reschedue or cancel your appointment, please notify me at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged the full service fee amount. If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, you will need to reschedule.
Tan Care
Use this handy timeline to know when to take action to ensure you achieve the best tan results possible! Follow either the day before or morning of directions based on your appointment time. Shower AT LEAST 4 HOURS PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT. I REPEAT, DO NOT SHOWER RIGHT BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT!!! You will risk having your tan lighter. Make sure any manicures and pedicures are done prior to appointment, while massages, waxing, or other treatments should be done at least 24 hours prior to your spray tan.
- Shave to remove unwanted body hair. Shave the night before your appointment, exfoliate AFTER shaving!!
- Exfoliate-Use an oil free exfoliant, store from the top and work your way down. Easiest way to exfoliate is to use a wash cloth and soak in the bathtub. Do not apply anything to your skin after
- Shower as normal, then exfoliate entire body (starting from the top, working to the feet) with an oil-free exfoliant to remove unwanted residues and return your skin to its cleanest state (IF YOUR APPOINTMENT IS LATER IN THE DAY, OTHERWISE FOLLOW DAY BEFORE DIRECTIONS)
- DO NOT apply deodorant, make-up, fragrance oils, colognes, moisturizers: these create a barrier
- Remove make-up, deodorant, etc. (if you did apply them) with sluff exfoliating wipes (Provided)
- Pull hair away from face and neck, and secure with a hair tie, and remove all jewelry
- Follow all instructions given by your Spray Tan artist for best results
- Avoid anything that will get your spray tan wet (exercising, sweating swimming, hot room yoga, dishes, skin to skin contact, crying, pets, rain, etc.)
- Do NOT apply moisturizers, try to avoid fragrance oils, colognes, make up, etc...
- Do NOT keep touching your skin to check your tan, this will transfer solution to your palms
- When it is time to rinse off: USE WATER ONLY
- Do NOT use soaps (especially Dove) or shampoos on initial rinse
- Maintain your tan with spray tan safe moisturizer, or DHA infused Tan extender, use twice daily (as for recommendations at your appointment)
- Apply additional moisturizer after anything that will dry out your skin (working out, ocean water, hot tubs, chlorine pools, excessive sweating, etc)
- Your face and hands will fade faster than the rest of your tan: use a DHA-infused tan extender to maintain a flawless, even tan. Apply at night before bed for best results.
REMEMBER: YOUR TAN WILL LAST LONGER THE BETTER YOU TREAT YOUR SKIN! FOLLOW THESE PRE/POST CARE DIRECTIONS TO MAINTAIN THE LIFE OF YOUR TAN!
- Do NOT wear tight clothing (tight socks, boots, belts, gloves, stockings, leggings, skinny jeans)
- Do NOT wear anything with a draw string. They cause indentations in your skin, which often translates into weird marks in your tan
- Do NOT wear clothing that will rub when you move. The more your skin rubs along a surface, the more likely it is that the spray tan solution will rub off
- Do NOT wear tight necklaces or bracelets, or accessories that rub
- DO wear loose clothing (sun dresses, skirts, loose fitting pants, looser shorts), it's best to not wear your bra after appointment
- Do wear clothing that won't make you sweat. Sweating will lighten a tan, or worse, cause it to be streakly or runny
- Do wear clothing that covers all of your tan if raining
Flip Flops are best OR UGG type boots in the winter - Bring a towel to sit on in your car for the ride home and bring an umbrella if it rains
FOR BEST RESULTS AND TO MAINTAIN THE LIFE OF YOUR TAN, MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS!!
